One of the great skills of the general practitioner is to recognise cancer illness in its early stages. Cancer is a clear concern for many patients who consult their doctor and it is a concern driven by common life experience. The role of the general practitioner extends from primary prevention through early diagnosis of cancer to terminal care. Many terminally ill patients prefer the option of a death at home. Helping patients die with dignity and with minimal distress has been one of the most fundamental aspects of medicine.
